Nigerian eBay scam

So this is what happened to me, don't end up trusting these guys.

  1. I put my Dell XPS on eBay up for sale (buy it now or best offer) for £680 + £9 postage.
  2. 10 minutes later an eBay member bought it at full asking price, I was very surprised at how quick it had been bought, but very happy indeed.
  3. The member had 0 feedback and joined on the same day I listed my item (19th May). So I quickly looked up the member, she had a genuine UK address under the name Beatrice.
  4. I received an eBay message "Hi mate, i just bought your item right here now and i will like to know if the item is as good as you describe because am about to make payment now via paypal. Please getback to me asap to confirm this.
    Thanks"
  5. So I thought OK this sounds like a reasonable question so I answered saying how great the condition was. But I was slightly suspicious because I didn't think someone called Beatrice would talk like that.
  6. The next day, I received 2 emails one from PayPal and one from eBay. She added £100 to the postage telling me that I have to post it to a Nigerian address to a family member for his birthday, and she is apparently in Hawaii doing missionary work.
  7. I looked at the real sender's email and they were both from a Gmail account. Strange, surely shouldn't they be from eBay and PayPal?
  8. So I decided to go on eBay chat and report the member, and he confirmed that they were fraudulent emails, and the PayPal transaction never existed. He refunded me the eBay fees, told me NOT to send the item then suspended the member.
  9. Meanwhile I decided to have some FUN and go along with his story, I emailed him/her "Dear Beatrice, Thanks for the payment of £780. I am at the moment packaging the item , can I just confirm the address is: *** I will send the item by DHL because compensation for Royal Mail only goes up to £500. Regards, Jonathan"
  10. Later I got another email from eBay confirming that the member had been suspended but is in the process of reinstatement. The email told me to continue with any outstanding transactions I had with the member. Strangely this email was from the same Gmail address as before. He/she must think that I'm stupid enough to believe this.
  11. He/she also sent me an email "Hi Jonathan, thanks for your mail, i got a minor problem with my ebay account and i have faxed all the required documents to ebay team and they promise to restore my account very soon but i don't know how long they are going to do this.I will like the laptop to be sent this afternoon via DHL as you promised so that the laptop will get to the destination before my pastor's birthday. Thanks for your understanding.
Beatrice (MRS)." I think he/she believes that I believe him/her. HAHA.
  12. So I continued and sent him/her the email: "Oh stupid ebay, always banning people especially those with 0 feedback. Yep, payment has cleared, just received email from paypal. Also I got an email for account resinstatement from eBay telling me to continue any transactions. Yea I have arranged for DHL pickup tomorrow morning, and it is a 48 hour service so I hope it will arrive in time for your Pastor's birthday. Kind Regards, Jonathon"
  13. To which he replies: "
Thanks for getting back to me Jonathan, i will be waiting to receive the shipment tracking number to my pastor's address first thing tomorrow morning and please help me declare the item value as £100 or less so that there will not be any problem for my pastor in receiving this laptop. The same address you forwarded is my pastor's address in Nigeria. Thanks once again for being an honest seller.
    Kind Regards,
Beatrice (MRS)." Believing that I will give him a tracking number the following day.
  14. To following day he gets a bit impatient. "Hi Jonny, am still waiting to receive the shipment tracking number via dhl as you promised.Pls get back to me asap. Thanks
    Beatrice (MRS)."

  15. A few hours later I receive an email from eBay saying that I have been banned because I did not send the item. Guess who sent it.
  16. Also got an email from the eBay senior vice president of eBay. Oh no... I am so scared.
So this is how far these scammers try to go, impersonating eBay and PayPal to send fraudulent emails. Whatever you do DON'T give in, you can play around with them but don't give anything away, check up my tips on how to identify a scammer. But it's best just to ignore any emails from them, good email clients can identify scam emails but some still get through.
